Aussie Ubuntu MythTV Resources

A couple of people have asked for the web resources I used to build my MythTV box. Here are the main ones:

MythTV on Ubuntu:
http://parker1.co.uk/mythtv_ubuntu.php
This is a complete how-to on how to get MythTV set up on Ubuntu from scratch. It’s genius.
Mr Parker’s also built a net-booting EPIA MythTV front-end - i.e. no hard drives, and no CPU fan, to keep the noise down. When my XBox Mark One finally dies, this is what I’ll replace it with.

Ubuntu Guide:

Covers a large slice of things you will want to set up when you first install Ubuntu - handling RARs, wicked codecs like MP3 etc.

General help for MythTV

Australian XMLTV grabber (AKA TV Guide):
http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~willu/xmltv/tv_grab_au_reg.html
You need this (if you live in Australia) to populate your TV guide. While you can use the EPG transmitted by the TV stations, you’ll find they only send “what’s on now/what’s on next” data, rather than a full weekly guide. This is a script to grab that data, plus some doco on how to get it working.

XML Channel IDs:
http://www.ozmyth.com/wiki/Configuring+MythTV+for+Australian+Digital+TV
Once you got your TV guide data, you need to associate the channels it contains with the one your receiver is picking up. Essentially, you just add a standard label to each channel your receiver is picking up; MythTV then shows the program guide associated with that label.

Rumour has it that Aussie TV companies will be forced into transmitting proper EPGs. I’ll believe this when the first fines are handed out to the commercial channels.
